HTC Flyer – 7-Inch Android Tablet

logo

HTC Flyer is the 7-inch Android tablet, which is the HTC’s first launch in the tablet market. Even though it doesn’t have the latest hardware or operating system, it proves to be a solid performer.

Specifications

The HTC Flyer comes with a 7-inch screen, 1.5 Giga Hertz single-core processor, and dual cameras, 16Gige Bytes of in-house memory, a micro SD card slot and a headphone jack. AAAA battery is used for running the optional pen. It has a micro-USB port, and you can charge with a standard micro-USB or a proprietary cord.

One might find the flyer to be not the most beautiful tablet in the market. It has an peculiarly wide bezel, and white plastic end plates that does not go well with the aluminum body. You could use the battery after charging it completely for a day. For a heavy usage, you’ll need to recharge it before the day is done with.

Speed

The HTC Flyer is not slow, but it evidently shows that you are functioning on a single-core tablet and not on a dual-core tablet. It shows little lag while running several applications at any given real time. Watching YouTube videos is smooth on the Flyer with little to no noticeable skips.

Ease of use

This tablet is incredibly easy to use, similar to using a smart phone. It has three navigation buttons namely, a home button, back button and options button, which would move with you when you switch from portrait to landscape. It is unfortunate that this device is not running Honeycomb, but runs on Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread with a HTC sense overlay.

When the size of this tablet is taken into consideration, it looks a little hefty, weighing just less than a pound. It fits into more spacious coat pockets and even medium sized purses with ease, and is never a problem to hold in your hand, while in a train or a bus.

Versatile features

The cameras are of excellent quality, but with some fuzzy edges. The speakers speak for themselves and you can enjoy good music. Don’t expect too much about achieving multimedia masterpieces, but you can have smooth video chat through the Flyer.

Gaming would disappoint you a little, but it has a huge variety of them that you can try your hand at. The applications are more optimized for phones, and look stretched out or way too small on the 7-inch screen. However, the Notes application syncs to the popular note-taking application Evernote. You can take audio notes, add photos, or write notes and save them on Evernote with no effort at all.

The Pen

The most infuriating thing about the Flyer is that the pen only works for certain applications. It is used in Notes, to add diagrams or doodles to your text notes. You can see some lag while writing at normal speed, but it is not very distracting.

Bottom Line

The HTC Flyer offers the basic operations beautifully and distinguishes itself from the pack by having unique pen functions that are not found in other tablets. It is priced at $499.99 without the HTC Scribes stylus. Even though the device is cool, it is hard to justify paying that kind of amount for Gingerbread and single-core tablet.
